Gaia - Earth Mother

Mother of All Things

PictureEarth From Space courtesy of NASA
Gaia (also spelled Gaea), the primordial Greek Earth Mother, who was said to have created the universe, the first race of gods, and mankind. This article explores the different concepts of Gaea, Our Earth Mother.

Is the Earth alive? Is she sentient? What can we do to save the earth?

Who is the Earth Mother? Are there songs and chants to honor her?

These questions, and more, are explored. Enjoy your stay!

Who Is the Earth Mother?

PictureAlex Grey - Gaia - Poster - ad
“The Earth Mother is the most vivid and immediate face which the Goddess presents to us. She is fertility itself, for mankind and for all creatures and plants. She gives birth to us and to them; she nourishes us and them throughout life, and in death receives the empty physical shell back into herself and transforms it into new fertility; for she is both the womb and the tomb, which is again the womb. She maintains the eternal, rhythmic balance by which plant feeds animal and animal feeds plant, and each moreover breathes out the air which the other needs to breathe in.

She can be merciless in defense of that balance. When it is threatened by one part of her family of children, she will take action, as drastic as may be necessary, before the situation gets out of hand.”

From The Witches’ Goddess: The Feminine Principle of Divinity by Janet and Stewart Farrar.

The Millennial Gaia

I first met the Millennial Gaia sculpture several years ago while living in Escondido CA. I say “met”, because my first impression upon walking into a local metaphysical store and seeing this sculpture, was one of awe and an almost immediate desire to have her come home to live with me.

Gaia is the primal Greek goddess personifying the Earth. The statue was created by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart, the founder of the Church of All Worlds. Along with being an artist who enjoys sculpting images of the Gods and Goddesses, he is also an author, lecturer, teacher, transpersonal psychologist, metaphysician, shaman, and priest of the Earth-Mother Gaia. He likes to call himself a “wizard.” He is credited with formulation of the thealogy of deep ecology, which has become known as The Gaea Thesis.

Zell designed his vision of Gaia with a planetary globe forming Her pregnant belly. Every part of Her body contains symbols of the living Earth. Sculpted in the back of Her hair are animals tracing the evolution of life on land, and those on Her legs trace the evolution of life in the sea. One breast represents the moon, the other the is a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables. Similar engravings on her arms show the forests: Redwoods on Her right arm, and the tropical Rain Forest on Her left. Her facial features are a blend of all races. She symbolizes the interconnectedness of all beings. The statue comes with a printed guide to every image. This is one altar statue you will treasure forever.

Fall in Love With Mother Earth

PictureThich Naht Hanh's describes Mother Earth as a "living being."
"You carry Mother Earth within you. She is not outside of you. Mother Earth is not just your environment. In that insight of inter-being, it is possible to have real communication with the Earth, which is the highest form of prayer. In that kind of relationship you have enough love, strength and awakening in order to change your life." Thich Naht Hanh

Buddhist monk Thich Naht Hanh explains why mindfulness and a spiritual revolution, rather than economics, is needed to protect nature and limit climate change in this interview with The Guardian, "Beyond environment: falling back in love with Mother Earth."

Lisa Thiel Songs to the Earth Mother

Doing Our Part to Heal the Earth

The world was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Michael Jackson on June 25, 2009. During his life he wrote many wonderful songs. In the "Earth Song" he gave a very poignant and moving look at how we humans are destroying our wonderful Earth Mother, yet holds out hope that we have the power to heal the world.

According to Songfacts Michael Jackson said “I remember writing Earth Song when I was in Austria, in a hotel. And I was feeling so much pain and so much suffering of the plight of the Planet Earth. And for me, this is Earth’s Song, because I think nature is trying so hard to compensate for man’s mismanagement of the Earth. And with the ecological unbalance going on, and a lot of the problems in the environment, I think earth feels the pain, and she has wounds, and it’s about some of the joys of the planet as well. But this is my chance to pretty much let people hear the voice of the planet. And this is “Earth Song.”

Tribute to Michael Jackson at 2010 Grammys. I still get chills when I watch it.

"The earth is mother
of all that is natural.
Mother of all that is human.
She is the mother of all,
for contained in her
are the seeds of all."

Song for the Ocean by Kristen Hoffman

This video is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.

“We are all connected by the Ocean.
Our everyday actions affect the world in which we live,
and all creatures sharing our planet.
I wrote “Song for the Ocean,” so that, through singing,
we can raise our awareness and get involved
in creating positive environmental change.”

Talking to Mama

To me, when I talk to the goddess Gaia, I am talking to Mama. One of the chants I have linked to above is called "The Earth is My Mother." It goes on to say, "she will take care of us." In order for her to do that, we must also take care of her.

We have lost so much due to our disregard for Mother Earth. I sometimes think that She would be justified in wiping all humans from the planet and starting over. That may yet come to pass.

I enjoy receiving comments on my writing, but comments are not enabled on this page. I encourage you to visit my blog post "Every Day is Earth Day" where I talk a little about caring for our planet. You are more than welcome to leave a comment there.
